Emergency FAQ

Q: Life Threating Emergency?
A: Call 911 or your local operator! After the major threat is gone and you still need Capt. Handyman then call or email once the threat is gone.

Q: Water overflowing or won't stop...what do I do?
A: Most homes have a water shut-off valve that looks similar to a garden hose spicket handle in the front of the house facing the street. If you find the box in the sidewalk or in some cases between the road and your house, that has a metal lid and says "WATER" on it, and follow a straight line from that to your home you'll locate it. Turn the handle clockwise until it stops. If that doesn't work, open the lid on the water meter box with a flat screwdriver and with a cresent wrench or pair of pliers, twist the valve closest to the street until the two round parts line up.

Q: Overflowing or leaking toilet...what do I do?
A: Behind the toilet on the wall will be a water shut-off valve. Twist knob clockwise until water stops. Plunge until water drops suddenly. If water doesn't drop your sewer or drainfield line is clogged and backing up. Another quick way to stop the water flowing into the toilet is to remove the tank lid and lift up the float (rod with a big round ball at the end). Then, put something across the span of the tank to hold it (like a toilet brush) and check where water is coming from.
